Waiting List For Services
Agency - West of Ireland Alzheimer Foundation
Vat Bill: €252,000 approx. (£100,000 + €225,000)
The West of Ireland Alzheimer Foundation was founded in 1994 to
help people suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and their Carers.
The Foundation serves the functional area of the Western Health
Board and provides a range of Residential, Day Care and Home Care
services.
In 1998 the Foundation built and commissioned, Marian House, a
purpose built Respite Care unit in Ballindine, Co. Mayo. This Home
provides regular breaks for approx 300 families annually and Day
Care. In 2001 Maryfield Nursing Home in Athenry, Co. Galway was
purchased. Maryfield is a 22 bed unit which provides Long Stay,
Respite Care and Day Care.
The Foundations care programme is based on helping Carers by giving
them support in their own homes (In Home Support Service) and by
providing Carers with residential respite care of one, two or three
weeks for their loved one at regular intervals. In areas where the
Foundation is unable to provide community service a financial allowance
is paid to families to enable them to pay for such a service.
These services are subsidised by the Foundations own fundraising
and VAT must be paid on all fundraising costs.
There is currently a waiting list of over 200 people suffering
from Alzheimer’s Disease, for residential care in the Western
Health Board area and because of this increasing demand the Foundation
propose to build two new Homes in County Galway within the next
two to three years.
In the building and purchasing of the Foundation’s two existing
Homes a VAT bill of some £100,000 (€127,000 approx) was
incurred. The VAT bill for the two proposed buildings will be in
excess of €225,000.
If all this money paid in VAT were available to the West of Ireland
Alzheimer Foundation, the benefits would be enormous for Carers
of Alzheimer Patients and to the person suffering from this most
dreadful disease.
